Who We Are

The Partnership for Food Safety Education is a not-profit organization that unites industry associations, professional societies in food science, nutrition and health, consumer groups, and the U.S. government to educate the public about safe food handling.

According to public health and food safety experts, each year tens of millions of illnesses in this country can be traced to foodborne bacteria. The Food and Drug Administration estimates that 2 to 3 percent of all foodborne illnesses lead to secondary long-term illnesses. For example, certain strains of E. coli can cause kidney failure in young children and infants; Salmonella can lead to reactive arthritis and serious infections; Listeria can cause meningitis and stillbirths; and Campylobacter may be the most common precipitating factor for Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The Partnership is the creator and steward of the Fight BAC!® campaign, a food safety initiative that educates consumers about the four simple practices -- clean, separate, cook and chill -- that can help reduce their risk of foodborne illness.

BAC!, the campaign's "bacteria mascot," is the invisible enemy who tries his best to spread contamination wherever he goes. The Fight BAC!® campaign came out of extensive consumer research. Giving foodborne bacteria a "personality" makes learning about the subject easier and more memorable for kids and adults alike. Fight BAC!® materials are all online, where they are accessed and used by consumers, teachers, dieticians, public health officials and extension agents across the United States.

As of early 2009, the Partnership's membership comprises 18 associations and nonprofit organizations. Our members represent the country's leading consumer organizations, food industry associations, commodity groups and professional associations in the food sciences and nutrition.

The Partnership is funded by the contributions of industry trade and professional associations, through grants, and through technical assistance and in-kind support provided by government agencies and consumer organizations.
