April 9, 2003 -- Washington, DC -- The Partnership for Food Safety Education (PFSE), a nonprofit public-private coalition dedicated to educating the public about safe food handling and food security to help reduce foodborne illness, recently elected the first officers of the Board of Directors.
Members of PFSE represent industry, government and consumer groups, as well as alliances with corporate America. Tim Hammonds, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Food Marketing Institute will serve as Chairman and John Farquharson, FMP, president of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's International Food Safety Council was elected vice chairman. Both will serve a two-year term.
"The Board of Directors for PFSE will guide the partners' efforts to educate Americans about food safety practices and build awareness of how all of us can work together to prevent foodborne illness," said Dr. Hammonds, PFSE Chairman. "The Board recognizes that this diverse group has resources to develop a wide range of programs and messages to educate consumers on steps they can take to ensure food safety at home. Further, Board members understand that this partnership represents a unique opportunity to take these messages to consumers on a broad scale in order to empower them to take the appropriate measures to protect their food safety and security."
The Board of Directors for the Partnership for Food Safety Education includes J. Patrick Boyle, President and CEO, American Meat Institute; Mildred M. Cody, Ph.D., RD, Associate Professor, Georgia State University, Carol Tucker Foreman, Distinguished Fellow and Director, Food Policy Institute, Consumer Federation of America; Louis Raffel, President and CEO, American Egg Board; and Anthony Volk, President, Volk Enterprises, Inc.
