Seniors in Michigan Focus on Food Safety

September 25, 2017

In July, Eileen Haraminac, MS, an extension educator with Michigan State University, responded to the Partnership for Food Safety Education’s offer to BAC Fighters for a Don’t Wing It health fair kit. The kits were mailed out in late August.

Eileen put the kit into action when she partnered with the Macomb County (MI) Community Action Group – Macomb Food Program at one of their food distribution sites – the Centerline Towers Senior Apartments. They brought in the mobile food pantry to distribute fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, bread and other items for the residents.

The event brought out 75 seniors. As the seniors waited in line for the distribution, Eileen gathered them in small groups of 10 to discuss the Don’t Wing It brochure and to have short conversations about the use of the plastic bags at the meat counter. Eileen talked with the seniors about the poultry handling messages and the recipes from Don’t Wing It. She reports that most of the seniors were unaware of the spread of bacteria from rinsing poultry, and she thinks that it was effective to talk with them about the importance of safe minimum temperatures to kill bacteria.

Kroger Helps Michigan Shoppers Become ProducePros!

May 26, 2015

Displays and radio messages provide customers with food safety info to take home with purchases.

The Partnership for Food Safety Education worked with contributing partner Kroger to create a week- by- week Food Safety Education Month outreach plan.  We thank every participating Kroger Co. store for connecting with customers on this important topic!

With the help of their local Kroger stores, thousands of Michigan consumers took steps in September toward becoming ProducePros.

The Partnership’s ProducePro campaign is six actionable practices for consumers to enjoy fresh and safe fruits and vegetables at home. Kroger used campaign elements to create stanchion signs for set-up in all 124 Michigan Kroger stores. The stores also used in-store radio to broadcast consumer food safety tips read by a Kroger chef. What a great way to inform consumers during the shopping experience!

Some stores decided to do more, setting up food safety tables where customers could get the Partnership’s Franken BAC Drawing Contest page and free Home Food Safety Mythbusters flyers.

Thank you Michigan Kroger!

Michigan Fund Makes Food Safety Projects Possible

A Food Safety Training and Education grant yields benefits for Michigan consumers

Michigan Fund Makes Food Safety Projects Possible

Every year, the Food and Dairy Division of Michigan’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) offers a grant for Food Safety Training and Education.

BAC Fighter Jeanne M. Hausler reports that these grants have allowed development of consumer-facing materials that target Michigan residents.

Another major benefit of the program to Michigan consumers is the improved food safety knowledge among employees of Michigan’s retail grocery stores and restaurants.

The Michigan Farmers Market Association is among the winners of the 2014 grant.  They plan to provide training and education to consumers for food safety at farmers markets. Click here for a list of the rest of the 2014 grantees.

Thank you Jeanne and your team at MDARD for funding these amazing projects in food safety education!
